Protein is another crucial ingredient in anyone’s diet. Similar to Carbohydrates and Fats, Protein is also classed as a Macronutrient that is essential to health. Protein is essential as it builds lean muscle tissue which increases strength, power and stamina.
Protein molecules are formed by linking smaller units of amino acids. Single amino acids come as a result of the breakdown of protein chains to be used throughout the body. The chains of amino acids are known as Polypeptides. If the amino acid chains have less than 50 amino acids they are classed as Peptides, otherwise they are Proteins.
Proteins also produce the same energy yield as Carbohydrates, 4kcal per gram. They are however a lot more difficult to break down so Carbohydrates are preferred as a source of energy for the body to function effectively.
A lack of quality protein can result in loss of muscle, a weak immune system, slow recovery and low energy levels. If you want to build muscle, increase strength, reduce body fat whilst maintaining muscle tone and definition, or simply stay lean and healthy, then protein as a supplement is a must. Protein based supplements can give people the added edge they need to enhance their game or training.
Protein supplementation is similar to that of Creatine, as there are four different types available. The main types of Protein are Whey, Whey Isolate, Casein and Multi Blend. Casein protein and protein blends operate by slowly releasing protein and amino acids in the body. This slow release ensures that the body has a constant supply of protein and amino acids throughout the day. Since casein protein slowly enters the blood stream, it has very little impact on protein synthesis. It has a powerful effect, however, in suppressing protein breakdown.
Whey proteins and Whey protein isolate on the other hand are fast digesting proteins. Although these proteins do not last as long, they play a huge role in the production of new muscle tissue, and muscle strength through increasing Protein Synthesis.
